I am James’ mum, and like many parents of children with Special Educational Needs, we’re on a unique and unexpected journey. This is a glimpse into our life.
I am now a certified Inclusion Practitioner (Special Education Needs), and I am still learning. As a parent, I learn from other parents, health professionals, educators, academics, therapists, advocates, and specialists. I can attest to the importance of continuous evolution in our approach to education. Our roles must evolve to guarantee equality and quality of education for our children. Embracing a model of continuing personal and professional development effects evolution that reflects the collective experience of all involved.
A romantic notion I enjoy telling is James how we were once one when he was growing ‘inside mummy’s tummy’. Of course, he is and will always be his own person, I was and am his vessel for development. We are perfectly imperfect, reflective, grateful, and resilient. We treasure both togetherness and solitude. I am resolute, and sometimes frustrated. Naturally, James and I are similar genetically, but also beautifully unique, it’s human nature.
