I am James’ mum, and like many parents of children with Special Educational Needs, we’re on a unique and unexpected journey. This is a glimpse into our life.
I’m no expert, but I’m always learning. As a parent constantly learning from a network of parents, professionals, and postgraduate study, I can attest to the importance of continuous evolution in our approach to education. We must embrace a model of continuing personal and professional development, where our roles evolve ensuring equality of education and reflecting the collective expertise of all involved.
A romantic notion I enjoy telling is James how we were once one when he was growing ‘inside mummy’s tummy’. Of course, he is and will always be his own person, I was and am his vessel for development. We are perfectly imperfect, reflective, grateful, and resilient. We treasure both togetherness and solitude. I am resolute, and sometimes frustrated. Naturally, James and I are similar genetically, but also beautifully unique, it’s human nature.
